So you want to be a Bus Driver

First Steps to Becoming an LCS School Bus Driver: Attend a Bus Class. Lincoln County Schools offers in-person classes several times a year; this three-day class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To sign up for this class, please call the Transportation Office, and we can assist you in registering for the next available class. A list of upcoming class dates is on the main Transportation web page.

NC DMV also offers Virtual Classes, which consist of three days of online classroom work. The online classroom portion is from 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Testing is on the fourth day at the Transportation Office, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. To sign up for the Virtual Classes, please get in touch with the Transportation Office. We can assist you with registering. The class schedule is available on the main Transportation web page.

Additional Information about Becoming a Bus Driver: Testing and Behind-the-Wheel Training—On the third day, there will be a four-part test. You must pass all four parts of the test to be eligible to obtain your CDL Learners Permit. You must hold the CDL Learners Permit at least 14 days before you begin behind-the-wheel training.

As part of the training process, you must go to the DMV to obtain a CDL Permit. Currently, NCDMV operates by appointment only from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. After 11 a.m., the DMV handles walk-in services. To make an appointment online with the DMV, go to https://skiptheline.ncdot.gov/. Check all surrounding DMV locations; most appointment times are several weeks out.

To expedite your training, you may schedule your DMV appointment the day after the last day of class.

You must hold the commercial learner permit for at least 14 days before we can schedule your behind-the-wheel training. The three-day behind-the-wheel training is scheduled based on employment with Lincoln County Schools.

You may use the following links to review the CDL manual or the School Bus Handbook. You do not need to print; you will receive your own in class.
